Whitchurch Silk Mill Jubilee Event: Fifties Fete
To celebrate HRH The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years on the throne, we’re taking a step back in time to the 1950s.
Pedlars and Petticoats, a historic interpretation and performance company committed to bringing the past to life, will be hosting Royal etiquette lessons, games and crown making, and a chance to dress up, as well as displaying items from the Coronation. You’ll also be able to contribute to our reminiscence project at their stall; we have been working with Pedlars and Petticoats on a community, oral history project, alongside Whitchurch Guides and residents at Bere Hill care home, to collect memories of the Platinum Jubilee and The Queen’s Coronation.
For those of you who like a boogie, we’re hoping to get you bopping and jiving with music throughout the day provided by vintage singer, Luka Watabe, and local ukulele band, Loose Chippings.
Luka was born and raised in Japan and is currently settled in London. Her passions are music, art, and history and she especially finds beauty in the glamorous world of vintage culture and jazz. She fell in love not only with jazz songs but also the style: gorgeous dresses, perfect hair, make-up and charismatic personalities such as her idols Julie London and Peggy Lee.
Loose Chippings started life from classes at the Viables Centre in Basingstoke and have been doing gigs for about 6 years, including closing and opening days at the Silk Mill.
For the lovers of vintage transport, we’ll be joined by Vintage Hoot and Andover Model Railway Club. Vintage Hoot, who provide authentic stunning vintage and classic cars for events found nowhere else, are generously providing two vehicles and Andover Model Railway club have sourced a genuine 50’s Hornby Dublo 3-rail track and rolling stock with die-cast metal buildings!
Test your skill at our fete games, like the coconut shy and tin can alley, or cheer your duck on in the duck race with a glass of Pimms. Or if you’ve got baking skills fit for a Queen why not enter our baking competition (information on how to enter here)?
The babbling River Test, alongside which HRH spent her honeymoon downstream in Romsey, is an ideal setting to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee.
The Fifties Fete is a free entry community event and will run from 12:00 – 4:00pm, Friday 3rd June
With thanks to Whitchurch Town Council for providing funding for our fete.
