New Exhibition: Silk Unwrapped

By admin 12.05.2021

Our new exhibition Silk Unwrapped takes you on a journey of discovery through our silk archive.  We have chosen a beautiful selection of fabrics to display, and have uncovered some of the stories behind each piece.  Over lockdown, we were very fortunate to receive donations from the Hide family (the last family owners of the Mill), including a silk shirt and silk ties that were woven here, as well as two, huge dye vats that have never been on display before and share the fascinating story of how these objects were used at the Mill.  Often a frequently asked question from visitors is ‘Do you dye your silk?’, and now we can fill that gap in our story with the objects themselves.

Another new addition to our collection, and the first time it has been on display, is a length of silk ribbons that our Weavers have been busy working in the Weaving Shed.  The section we have on display is made of a champagne warp, with an ‘Alice Blue’ weft, and it looks beautiful hanging in the exhibition space.  We were also very excited to discover, that a piece of those ribbons is going to be used in the upcoming Season 2 of Jane Austen’s Sanditon … amazing to see a piece of our silk used in a new TV series!

The exhibition is open from Monday 17th May-Sunday 27th June 2021. We are open Tuesday to Sunday 10.30 am to 5 pm.
