Whitchurch Silk Mill: A Walk Through Time, created by Zeal Live, an experiential production house
Whitchurch Silk Mill Winter Lights Spectacular will be returning for 2022 in a blaze of glory from 28 January to 6 February. This time, visitors will make their way around an illuminated walk weaving through the Mill and gardens, as light displays transport them through time to the earliest days of the Mill. Inside the Mill, the historic machinery will be lit with displays of light representing patterns and swirling fabrics as our weavers weave silk on historic looms. Outside on Frog Island, where two parts of the River Test flow into one, light and classical music will wash over the Mill, the gardens and the tree-lined river banks, and the river will reflect the light.
This light show comes at an important time for the Mill and its community of supporters. It looks forward to the spring and the new season, but it also marks the start of a year in which we hope our community and communities across the globe can look forward to better times.
Lisa Gale, Visitor Experience Manager at the Mill, says: “This revives a Mill tradition that dates back to Victorian times when the Mill was owned by the Hide family. Then 400 stained glass candle holders covered the Mill and turned the millpond into a beautiful mirror of dancing colour. The practice faded during the twentieth century, though the candles were used for Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation in 1953.”
If this wasn’t enough, we will have special events happening throughout the 10-day experience which will include our launch event with Glow performer Nick Cook, who along with his robot stilt walker, will provide a spectacular show full of circus tricks sure to provide the wow factor on Friday 28th January. A special celebration of Chinese New Year on Tuesday 1st February with a performance from the Lion Dance UK team in the Mill grounds and on Wednesday 2nd January there is are sensory light activities from local company Sensory Toys, a quiet night for those that prefer a more relaxed atmosphere.
We will keep updating this events page and social media, so keep watch for more details soon!
The Winter Lights will be from 28 January to 6 February, 4pm to 9pm. The event is open every day, Monday to Sunday, and tickets are available from the Mill’s website.
