Heritage Skills Student Placements 2024

By admin 02.04.2024

We are delighted to announce that we are offering three 6-week Heritage Skills Student Placements, which will take place from 4th July to 3rd August 2024. This year, we are offering one placement for each of the following pathways: Heritage Weaving, Social Media & Marketing, and Heritage Management.

We welcome applications from those interested in working in the heritage sector and would like to apply for a six-week placement. During the placements, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn about the care and operation of our Victorian machinery
  • Learn about our weaving heritage
  • Learn about our brand and explore our archive to help develop ideas for developing Whitchurch Silk and Whitchurch Silk Mill
  • Discover how a working museum and visitor attraction operates, including meeting and guiding visitors, retail, catering, answering queries, and devising activities for families and visitors.

We are committed to ensuring that you have an excellent experience, but we would like to stress that while you will receive training and instruction, this is, in part, a self-led learning experience. It is a work placement that will provide you with an overview of working within a heritage weaving attraction.

We have three placements on offer, one for each of the following pathways:

  • Heritage Weaving
  • Social Media & Marketing
  • Heritage Management

Please state which pathway you are applying for.

Placement duration: 6 weeks, Tuesday to Saturday, 2nd July to 10th August 2024. Hours: 9.15 am to 5.15 pm, 5 days per week, including Saturdays. Some time will be spent engaging with visitors and working in each part of the visitor attraction.

What’s in it for you?

  • You will gain work experience to add to your CV and a good reference
  • You will learn about winding, warping, and weaving on Victorian and early 20th-century looms and the care that we take of our heritage machinery
  • You will apply the theory and practice you learned during your studies in a working environment
  • You will practice organizational, management, and personal skills
  • You will discover more about the silk industry and the heritage sector
  • You will experience working life in a busy living museum
  • You will gain valuable experience in dealing with visitors and customers and answering enquiries
  • You will receive a £500 bursary

See what our 2022 Students thought of their experience. Here are some testimonials from past placements:

  • “One of my favourite and most exciting placements I completed was at Whitchurch Silk Mill. I was at the mill for ten weeks, and I had a very hands-on and exciting experience.” – Loughborough University Student, 2015
  • “During my work placement, I learned a lot about how the mill operates now and how it has changed over time. I learned some of the skills involved and had the opportunity to operate some of the machinery, including the power looms. This led to me gaining a job at the silk mill.” – Winchester School of Art Student, 2014

How to apply:

Please send your CV and a cover letter with details about which pathway you would like to apply for, including details about your interests, objectives, and studies to by 22nd April 2024. Please do not send a design portfolio, but please share links to your professional social media profiles if you want to.

Interview date:

Tuesday, 7th May 2024. We hope to hold these interviews in person.
